Sustainability of pultruded composite materials: life cycle approach for TRIGLASS® profiles

Image

TOP GLASS is one of the first companies producing pultruded profiles who has developed a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) certified with an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD).

The analysis of the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is the first step to deeply know the environmental impact of a product, from raw materials extraction to product end of life.

The analysis shows that the raw material production represents the main cause of environmental impact. Regarding the most common indicator, carbon footprint, the raw materials’ production impacts for a value of 85%.

Also for this reason, TOP GLASS has chosen to purchase only from European suppliers, who pay special attention to reducing environmental impact. This has made it possible also to minimize the impact of transporting raw materials.

From an environmental point of view, TRIGLASS profiles present these advantages:

Durability: High resistance to critical outdoor conditions such as rain, UV radiation and extreme temperatures.

Maintenance free: the maintenance activities are not required. The costs and environmental impacts related to transportation, re-work or replacement are zero

Lightweight: Four times lighter than steel and one and half times than aluminium. This allows a reduction in the impact environment and energy use for transport, handling and installation of profiles.

Thermal insulation: Reduced heat transfer and energy loss

Recyclability: Pultruded profiles can be recyclable as secondary raw materials in different production cycles. Moreover the raw materials used may also contain a high percentage of recycled material
